Children must be over a height of 1.2m to climb the Lighthouse Tower.

The lighthouse is an old and quirky building and there are issues with accessibility. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate animals in the lighthouse.

The white light of Fanad Lighthouse is visible for 18 miles and the red light for is visible for 14 miles.

There are 76 steps to take you to the top of Fanad Lighthouse.

The tower is 22 metres high not including the lantern. The light is 39 metres above sea level.

In 1812 the frigate HMS Saldanha was shipwrecked on Fannet Point, as Fanad Head was then known. In response to this tragedy, a lighthouse was built and the first light shone out on St. Patrick’s Day, 17th March 1817.
