Up Helly Aa Festival comes to Fanad!            Saturday 28th July at 6:00pm

Join in a celebration of Scottish Viking heritage at Fanad Lighthouse this Saturday evening when the Jarl (chief Viking) and his guizers will sing their “Up Helly Aa” song and more, in full Viking dress, followed by a torch light procession from the Lighthouse to the Tavern

From the Outer Edge of Ulster – a talk by Dr. Breandán Mac Suibhne – Monday 13 August @ 2:00pm

Saturday 5 May 2018:  Along with The great Lighthouses of Ireland, Fanad Lighthouse will run a series of events for all ages and interests to celebrate our third ‘Shine a Light on Summer Festival.  We start in the morning with a coastal walk, bus leaves from the lighthouse at 10:00am.   Admission for the afternoon is €5 or €10 for families and from 12:00 – 5:00pm you can enjoy a range of events for all ages from face-painting, traditional games, rope making, basket making and music.  We have a talk on diving the north coast by Dearn McClintock from Sheephaven diving, on time and space by artist Aisling O Beirne.  At 1:30 we will have a demonstration on cooking with seaweed by Wild Strands (additional €10 & must be booked in advance!). And of course we will have tower tours all days.
On Saturday evening at 7:30 we will have an Oíche Airneáil with music, chat and dancing as Gaeilge.  This is a great opportunity to get together with local people and to try out whatever Irish you have.


09 June 2018: 

The Inaugural Lighthouse lecture from the Outer Edge of Ulster by Dr. Breandán MacSuibhne on   Hugh Dorian(1834 -1914) , school teacher in Fanad,
 and the memory and history of Ireland’s Great Famine will take place at
 Fanad Lighthouse, at 7 p.m.on Sat 9th June,2018.
Followed by an evening of traditional music with Martin McGinley and friends.
Admission €10. Booking recommended – limited capacity.
As well as editing The Outer Edge of Ulster Dr. MacSuibhne has published two other books on the outcome of the famine : The End of Outrage and Subject Lacking Words.
