The Irish language has always been centre stage in my life. My parents inspired a love for the language in us all. There were no Gaelscoileanna (Irish-medium schools) when we were growing up in Kildare but I was a member of Ógras (youth organisation) as a teenager, therefore I was speaking Irish outside of school with my friends. My brother is now headmaster of Gaelscoil Chill Dara!

I raised my own family with Irish in Belfast, where I was working in the Irish language arts. I’m a member of a book club where we all speak Irish, although we’re scattered throughout the country.

I’ve been Manager of Fanad Lighthouse since 2015. When I decided to apply for this job, it was important to me that I was moving into a Gaeltacht and that I would have the opportunity to promote the language and the Fanad Gaeltacht. We have a great team here at the lighthouse, some who are fluent in the language and others who aren’t, but everyone holds the language dear – as do visitors, both Irish and those from other countries.

#Irish is alive in our business! It’s prominent on signage and can be heard throughout the site, our craft shop is an outlet for craftspeople with Irish, we provide tours and accommodation with a service through Irish and we are active in the community group Gaeltacht Bheo Fhánada.

Since last year, Fanad Lighthouse has been the official Language Services Centre for the area. I’m so proud of what we as a team have done. We have a beautiful #language, ‘speak it and it will live’!

Tá an Ghaeilge lárnach i mo shaol i gcónaí. Spreag mo thuismitheoirí grá don teanga ionainn uilig. Ní raibh Gaelscoileanna ar bith ann agus muid ag fás aníos i gCill Dara ach bhí mé páirteach in Ógras mar dhéagóir, mar sin bhí an Ghaeilge á labhairt agam i gcónaí le mo chairde taobh amuigh den scoil. Anois tá mo dheartháir mar phríomhoide ar Ghaelcholáiste Chill Dara!

Thóg mé mo chlann féin le #Gaeilge i mBéal Feirste, áit a raibh mé ag obair in earnáil na hEalaíona Gaeilge. Bíodh go bhfuilmid scaipthe ar fud na tíre anois, tá mé i mo bhall de chlub leabhar agus an Ghaeilge mar theanga labhartha againn.

Tá mé mar bhainisteoir ar Theach Solais Fhánada ó 2015. Nuair a shocraigh mé cur isteach ar an phost seo, bhí sé tábhachtach dom go raibh mé ag bogadh isteach sa Ghaeltacht agus go mbeadh deis agam an teanga a chur chun tosaigh agus aird a tharraingt ar Ghaeltacht Fhánada. Tá foireann den scoth againn ag an Teach Solais, cuid acu a bhfuil an teanga ar a dtoil acu agus cuid eile nach bhfuil, ach achan duine báúil don teanga, díreach mar a bhíonn cuairteoirí, idir Éireannaigh agus eachtrannaigh.

Tá an teanga beo inár ngnó! Tá sí le feiceáil ar chomharthaíocht agus le cloisteáil ar fud an tsuímh, tugann muid ardán do dhéantóirí Gaeilge sa siopa ceardaíochta, cuireann muid turais agus seirbhís lóistín ar fáil trí Ghaeilge agus tá muid gníomhach sa ghrúpa phobail Gaeltacht Bheo Fhánada.

Is é Teach Solais Fhánada an Ionad Seirbhísí Teanga don cheantar ón bhliain seo caite. Tá mé iontach bródúil as an méid atá déanta againn mar fhoireann. Tá teanga álainn againn, ‘labhair í agus mairfidh sí’!

I was born in Ballywhoriskey, in the countryside on the #Fanad peninsula. I love #Irish because it is the unique language of #Ireland. No matter where in the world you go, you are likely to meet someone who can speak Irish with you. This reminds us of home and of our language’s interesting history.

I was first introduced to the language when I went to the local national school, Scoil Mhuire Caiseal. Growing up in Fanad, I attended lots of camps through Irish, which made the language enjoyable. I always had a great interest in our national language over the years – I’m now studying Irish in Dublin City University and am in the second year of my degree.

I’m a #footballer and Irish is really important in our club, Gaeil Fhánada / Fanad Gaels. Gaeil Fhánada take part in the Gaeltacht #football tournament every year. Irish is the only language spoken both on and off the pitch. This year, Fanad hosted the games for the county.

Irish plays a huge role at Fanad Lighthouse – for both staff and visitors. I love speaking Irish with the rest of the team and we all learn from each other. I’ve been working at the lighthouse for 4 years and in that time I’ve noticed how tourists want to know more about the langauge and want to learn a few phrases they can use again. Visitors who do speak Irish like to converse in Irish with locals and to find out more about the area.

There is a lot of #history relating to the language and it’s really important to keep it alive.

Ghaeilge mar tá an teanga uathúil d'Éireann. Is cuma cá dtéann tú ar domhan beidh duine ann i gcónaí a bheidh in ann an teanga a labhairt leat. Cuireann sé seo i gcuimhne dúinn ár dtír agus an stair spéisiúil atá taobh thiar den teanga.

Cuireadh an Ghaeilge in aithne dom den chéad uair nuair a d'fhreastail mé ar an bhunscoil áitiúil, Scoil Mhuire Caiseal. D’fhreastal mé ar go leor campaí trí Ghaeilge i bhFanáid nuair a raibh mé ag fás aníos, a rinne an teanga taitneamhach. Bhí spéis mhór agam i gcónaí inár dteanga náisiúnta i rith na mblianta. Táim ag déanamh stáidear ar an Ghaeilge anois in Ollscoil Chathair Bhaile Átha Cliath agus táim sa dara bliain den chéim faoi láthair.

Is peileadóir mé agus tá an Ghaeilge an-tábhachtach inár gclub áitiúil Gaeil Fhánada. Glacann Gaeil Fhánada páirt i gcomórtas peile na Gaeltachta gach bliain. Is í an Ghaeilge an t-aon teanga in úsáid ar an bpáirc agus lasmuigh de. I mbliana, bhí Fanáid mar óstach ar chomórtas peile na Gaeltachta an chontae.

Tá ról an-mhór ag an Ghaeilge i dTeach Solais Fhánada – tá sí an-speisialta do na
turasóirí agus don fhoireann. Ó thaobh na foirne de, is breá liom a bheith ag labhairt #Gaeilge leo agus foghlaimímid go leor óna chéile. Táim ag obair sa Teach Solais le ceithre bliana anuas agus san am sin thug mé faoi deara go mbíonn fonn ar chuairteoirí níos mó a fhoghlaim faoin teanga agus frásaí éagsúla a fhoghlaim ar féidir leo úsáid arís. Is breá le cuairteoirí a bhfuil Gaeilge acu Gaeilge a labhairt le muintir na háite agus tuilleadh a fháil amach faoin cheantar.

Tá an oiread sin staire taobh thiar den teanga agus tá sé iontach tábhachtach an teanga a choinneáil beo.

✴️MÍCHEÁL GIBBONS – ‘The best Barista’!

When I was younger and in national school I had no interest in Irish, I found it very difficult and I didn’t really understand much about the language. Then I went to secondary school, Pobalscoil Loreto, and I had Mícheál Mac Rabhartaigh as a teacher. He totally changed my mind about Irish. He’s a great teacher and he really inspired me.

Having worked at Fanad Lighthouse now for a couple of years, I really love the language. In the past I would think, ‘I would love to be able to speak Irish’, and now, when someone walks in, I can say ‘I’m not fluent (yet!) but I have Irish’. My colleagues have spent many hours teaching me and practising Irish with me – they’ve had a lot of patience. I’m so grateful to them. I now have the basic phrases and also the ‘seanfhocail’ (proverbs/sayings). Every week last summer I had a new seanfhocal to learn in the café.

I would say, if you have any interest in the language, try it, don’t be afraid, if I’m able to, anyone can. As one of my colleagues tells me, ‘Practice makes perfect’!

Blianta ó shin bhí mé ag rá ‘Ba mhaith liom a bheith in ann Gaeilge a labhairt’ ach inniu is féidir liom a rá, nuair a shiúlann duine éigin isteach, ‘Níl mé líofa (go fóill) ach tá Gaeilge agam’. Chaith mo chomhghleacaithe uaireanta fada agus iad chomh foighneach ag múineadh agus ag cleachtadh na Gaeilge liom. Tá mé an-bhuíoch díobh. Tá na frásaí bunúsacha agam anois agus tuigim na seanfhocail freisin. Achan seachtain le linn an tSamhraidh seo cáite bhí seanfhocal ós mo chomhair sa chaifé le foghlaim.

Deirimse leat - má tá spéis ar bith agat sa teanga bain triail as, ná bí buartha agus má tá mise abálta, is féidir le duine ar bith é a dhéanamh. Mar a dheireann duine de mo chomhghleacaithe eile liom, ‘Déanann cleachtadh máistreacht’!

I’m so lucky really because I was born and reared here in Fanad, a beautiful Gaeltacht area. I attended Scoil Mhuire Caiseal and it was there I first learnt Irish. Over the years since, I’ve always been interested in Irish and I am now in my degree year in NUI Galway studying Irish, our special language.

There is an emphasis on Irish at the lighthouse and we get to use our Irish with each other. Even the guides who started working here with no Irish, they now have Irish. They are so proud of themselves and rightly so. They don’t miss out on anything now. I love when I get the chance to teach a few words of Irish to our visitors. Often, like in every aspect of life, people are afraid they will make a mistake if they try something, this is true when it comes to speaking Irish. No one is perfect at anything in life and I’d love if there was an easy way to encourage someone who is having difficulties with Irish. Even if you have only some Irish – speak it, be brave! I’m optimistic that the Irish language has a bright future here. We need to remember that important saying – ‘A land without language is a land without soul’.

Rosie Nic Cionnaith - Marketing Officer

I wasn’t brought up speaking Irish but my oldest brother had very good Irish and so I was aware from a young age that this language existed. Thanks to a couple of good teachers, the spark was truly lit when I was in secondary school, and my love for the language is still as strong today. I remember the first time I realised I couldn’t find a way to say something in English – it came to me in Irish and there was no direct translation! It was then I really understood the power of language – it’s not just words, but a way of thinking. Irish gives you a certain window on the world, and a connection with the people who came before you – your tribe. For many years I made documentaries for TG4, the Irish language broadcaster and also worked with Foras na Gaeilge. Irish was always central to my work, and is now in my role at Fanad Lighthouse. I love that most of the team speak #Irish and that it is our daily working language. I’m raising my little girl with Irish and am beyond proud when she comes out with Irish vocabularly effortlessly. We’re lucky to have an excellent naíonra (Irish-speaking preschool) and bunscoil (primary school) Ghaeltachta in Fanad, as well as the community group Gaeltacht Bheo Fhánada, and we’re all working to speak and strengthen the #language here. I’ve had so many advantages in my life due to speaking Irish, and I want my daughter to have those advantages too.

Is aoibhinn liom go bhfuil Gaeilge ag formhór na foirne agus go bhfuil an Ghaeilge mar theanga laethúil ann. Táim ag tógáil m’iníne bhig le Gaeilge agus bím chomh bródúil nuair a thagann sí amach le focail Ghaeilge gan stró. Tá páirt lárnach ag an Ghaeilge i mo shaol go háirithe le cúpla bliain anuas. Thosaigh mé ag foghlaim an Ghaeilge ar an bhunscoil áitiúil, Scoil Mhuire Caiseal, agus bhí seans agam í a chleachtadh sa bhaile le mo mháthair agus mo sheanmháthair. Faoi láthair tá mé i mbun céime leis an Ghaeilge agus an tíreolaíocht in Ollscoil Mhá Nuad. Bainim an-sult as staidéar a dhéanamh uirthi chomh maith len í a mhúineadh. Is dócha gurb é an rud is dúshlánaí ná cúrsaí gramadaí, ach faigheann sé sin níos éasca le himeacht ama is tú ag úsáid an teanga go rialta. Tugann an teach solais deis dúinn ár gcuid #Gaeilge a úsáid go nádúrtha lena chéile agus muid ag obair, rud a thaitníonn go mór liom. Rud amháin a chur iontas orm nuair a thosaigh mé ag obair ag an Teach Solais ná an méid turasóirí a dhearna iarracht comhrá a bheith leat i nGaeilge. Dar liom tá an-tábhacht ag baint leis an Ghaeilge agus táim an-sásta go bhfuil níos mó daoine ag cur suim sa Ghaeilge in Éireann. Ag deireadh an lae is fíor an seanfhocal ‘Beatha Teanga í a labhairt’.

Irish plays a central part in my life, especially in the last few years. I first began learning Irish in the local national school, Scoil Mhuire Caiseal, and was able to practise it at home with my mother and grandmother. I’m currently doing a degree in Irish and geography in Maynooth University. I love studying and teaching Irish. I suppose the most challenging thing is the grammar, but it gets easier as time goes by and when you use the language regularly. Working at the lighthouse gives us a chance to use our Irish naturally together, which I really enjoy. Something that amazed me when I started working at the lighthouse was how many tourists would try to converse with you in Irish. I think #Irish is so important & I'm really happy that more people in Ireland are showing an interest in the language. At the end of the day, the old saying is true - 'The life of a language is to speak it'.

D'fhreastal mé ar Ghaelscoil Adhamhnáin i Leitir Ceanainn agus is ansin a d'fhoghlaim mé ár dteanga dhúchais. Tar éis sin, d'fhreastal mé ar Choláiste Ailigh. Is teanga speisialta í agus sílim féin go bhfuil sí ag dul ó neart go neart. Cinnte, tá an gramadach deacair ó am go céile ach éiríonn sé níos fusa le cleachtadh. Déanaimid ár ndícheall Gaeilge a labhairt thart fá'n Teach Solais agus is breá le na turasóirí í a chloisteáil. Bíonn an-suim ag cuid mhór acu sa teanga agus bíonn na céadta ceist acu fá Ghaeltacht Fhánada agus a leithéid. Bainim sult as na turais Ghaelacha, uaireanta tá sé níos fusa orm smaoiniú ar fhocail i nGaeilge. Bhí an-chuid turasóirí le Gaeilge againn an samhradh is a chuaigh thart agus is minic a thosaigh comhrá trí mheán na Gaeilge. Le cúnamh Dé beidh níos mó againn an samhradh seo!!!

Aisling Ní Shiadháil – Tour Guide and Barista:

I attended #Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin (Irish-medium primary school) in Letterkenny and it’s there that I learnt our native language. After that I went to Coláiste Ailigh (Irish-medium secondary school). It’s a special language and I think it’s going from strength to strength. Yes, the grammar can be difficult at times but it gets easier with practise. We speak #Irish at the Lighthouse as much as possible and tourists love to hear it. Lots of them are interested in the #language and have plenty of questions about the Fanad #Gaeltacht. I enjoy doing tours through Irish, sometimes I find it easier to think on words in Irish. We had a lot of visitors who spoke Irish last summer and often a conversation ‘as Gaeilge’ would spring up. Hopefully we’ll have more this summer!!!

Retention time
