At Fanad Lighthouse sustainability underpins everything we do. As a social enterprise we want to develop as an asset to the local community, culturally and economically, by providing employment in a remote, rural area, and by building a visitor experience that our community can be proud of. We want to ensure that visitors enjoy their time here, while also protecting what makes it special – this pristine coastal environment, the wildlife that inhabit it, and this unique heritage building.
Examples of ways in which we work towards sustainability are:
- We are a member of Sustainable Travel Ireland
- We are a member of Leave No Trace
- We are a member of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan
- We are an affiliate of Clean Coasts
- We have accredited eco-tourism training with the Wild Atlantic Ocean Heritage program
- We have a No Plastics policy – no single-use plastics in the shop, café, or elsewhere on site – glass bottles and compostable or reusable cups in the café
- Sourcing goods and services locally as much as possible
- Developing as a community hub, as an asset to locals and community groups
- Speaking, promoting and supporting the Irish language – we are the designated language services for the Fanad Gaeltacht
- Creating opportunities for local artists, craftspeople, designers and photographers, whose work we stock in our craft shop
- Choosing suppliers who use ethical and eco-friendly materials with sustainable/biodegradable packaging
- Education and events to highlight the importance of our marine and coastal environment
- Encouraging contributions to Citizen Science
- Responsible marketing
